Keep it natural

Fancy treating yourself to some serious foodie delights? Then let us tell you about
a little place we know

Us lucky Londoners have a wealth of fabulous foodie haunts to visit. From top-end restaurants to cosy cafes and farmer's markets, we really are spoilt for choice when we want to taste fantastic food. And one gem of a find that should be planted proudly on the good food map of the capital is the Natural Kitchen.

Located at the top of Marylebone High Street, the Natural Kitchen is the kind of shop that gives Marylebone its delightful village atmosphere and makes a shopping trip more a treat than a chore. The choice and quality of produce is unrivalled in London. On entering the ground floor you quickly realise it is serious about food. With friendly and knowledgeable staff, the ‘natural' element is obvious too - there are no frills here. Bustling with activity, you wander among large bags and containers of stock, and with the bare brick walls and white tiles, this ‘stripped back to the basics' appearance allows the food to be the star.

‘It's all in the taste for us,' comment owners David Graham and Justin Green. ‘Organic if necessary, wild when we can get it, but it is the artisan aspect that really excites us. Most of our food is supplied by small suppliers, who concentrate on quality rather than quantity. That gives us traceability - our beef for example is from a number of select farms in the British Isles, then butchered and hung for up to six weeks by us.'

Clearly passionate about what they do, Justin goes on to say: ‘it's about taking a commonsense approach. Our organic fruit and veg isn't flown in from around the world - rather when in season from trusted suppliers'. Regular events and tastings focus on the many different types of produce on sale, introducing customers to suppliers and their lovingly produced food.

Upstairs houses the café area - open from 8am for breakfast. Lunch consists of an exciting variety of salads, sandwiches, tarts and quiches - all made in the kitchens. Our recommendation? Bring a friend and share a smoked fish or charcuterie board and a bottle of wine. Oh, and the chocolate cake is to die for.

The basement houses a predominately British cheese (with some continental classics) and charcuterie counter with unusual selections - Scottish buffalo mozzarella and Cumbrian braesola to name but two. This is complemented by a superb selection of wines, with organic and biodynamic choices. Downstairs also houses the ‘Special' range, offering greats choices for coeliac, wheat and nut allergies.

The Natural Kitchen offers home delivery, corporate and private catering. The location is also close enough to Regent's Park to pick up the ingredients for a rather special picnic and spend a lazy afternoon lying out on the grass. Delicious!
