Wooden flooring is the ideal product to use in the kitchen environment, it offers all the benefits of tiles; natural product, hardwearing, easy to clean, choice of styles and colours with the added advantage of a warmer, softer feeling material.
Which wood?
Timbers such as Oak and Maple are available in a range of widths, grades and finishes to complement these popular choices for kitchen furniture, but other durable hardwoods such as Ipe, Walnut or Merbau are also ideal for kitchen use. A cleaner looking, less knotty board will give a more contemporary feel whilst wider, more rustic products will create a more traditional look.
Which finish should I use?
Scratches or dents in lacquer finishes caused by dropped knives or other kitchen implements are more difficult to repair locally so go for an oil or waxed finish which can easily be re-applied. A kitchen floor will inevitably be washed more often than those in other areas of the house, so choose a wooden floor that will be finished in situ to achieve a hermetic seal across the floor and always use a recommended cleaning product to avoid stripping off the finish as you clean !
Broadleaf's ‘hardwax' oil is an excellent choice in this environment. A natural, durable finish developed by Broadleaf, it is fast-drying and two coats can be applied in one day.
